Women and Nature
Q:
Do women have
an essential innate
disposition to have
a connection with nature?
It is a very good question. If women are in fact linked with nature, then their power, their prestige will come from their connection with nature, with Prakrti, with creation, isn't it? A woman will have her prestige enhanced, her body and mind strengthened by realization of her natural disposition and innate bio-physical tendencies which influence her psychic development as well as her physical development. So you see, a woman must understand this innate psychology, her involvement with the creative forces and the influence these forces will have upon her psychic and spiritual development.
Now in the course of history this has become a source of exploitation and diminishment of women. Why is this? Because with the development of emphasis upon a cosmology which worships rationality, intellect and abstraction, the feminine has become relegated to a lesser status. Women are seen as the temptresses, the evil influence bringing about the downfall of man. In the cosmology of patriarchy, women become the symbol of the degradation of consciousness through natural crudifying influences. Thus the Goddess, the Mother of life, the Source of all living beings, the Origin of all existence, the Preserver of this world cannot be fully understood. If women return to their power, their motherly qualities, their connectedness with creation, nurturance and preservation, if they accept their own sexuality, their cyclical nature, their womanliness; then they will find strength they have not known for ages. The women have adopted this patriarchal view. They are disconnected from themselves, so they think to accept this understanding of their feminine nature will diminish their status. But they are incorrect. It will make them aware of themselves. From this awareness they can become harmonious with their psycho-physical yearnings and they will find a different kind of power. Not one based upon dominance, but one based upon creation and nurturance.
You see it is a mistake for women to compete with men. When this is done, they forget themselves and lose sight of their real power. To do the dharma of another is never as good as to realize one's own dharma and express it to the fullest extent. All are capable of greatness. Only the path for those in masculine form and in feminine form may not be identical due to physical differences and resulting psychological variation.
So do not fear your womanhood. Be proud my daughter and know your own dharma as a woman. Then your heart will find a resting place my daughter. Women need not fear their bodies, their sexuality or their innate dispositions. They are in no way inferior due to these. That is the myth that has been perpetuated by religions which do not recognize the feminine aspect of divinity. The Goddess has many forms, many aspects. She is ever changing. But at Her root is the pure undifferentiated consciousness of the Purus'a. Like two in one, they cannot be torn apart.
