Humanistic Business Management

December 30, 1995

Q: What are the important principles to follow in the management of enterprises so as to maintain a humanistic, yet productive, work environment?

There are three primary principles which should be adhered to. First of all, there must be fairness. It is extremely important that an employer not practice preference to some over others but that he or she practice fairness in the workplace, that all are treated fairly, that they get their due for their work, that they are dealt with in a fair manner, not giving one preference and appreciation while not recognizing the other. So fairness is first and foremost.

Secondly, there should be generosity. An employer should treat their employees with kindness and generosity. They should not take the work of the employee without appreciation. There should be generosity. If the employee has certain needs, the employer should be generous, as generous as they are able within their capacity. They should not take a harsh and ungenerous approach.

And thirdly, there must be due process. That is, if there are any difficulties, there must be a procedure which is viable and appropriate to the place and situation for all to follow to resolve the difficulty. So these three things - fairness, generosity and procedure - must be in place to properly manage the people in an enterprise.
