Cosmology & Matter

September 30, 1993

Q.  In contemporary cosmology,  matter is said to have emerged at the moment of creation of the universe. In Ananda Marga philosophy,  matter emerges continuously due to the effect of tamoguna on Cosmic Citta.  How can scientific cosmology and Brahmacakra be reconciled?

I will answer.  It is a simple matter. You see when the Universe comes into manifestation,  there are three factors which influence the mundane expression. They are first the degree of development of the Cosmic expression,  the degree of inert substance produced and the interplay of cosmic factors including the three gunas. As for the passage of time it is dependent upon the subjective perception of a  Witnessing Entity. Time cannot exist apart from the Witnessing Entity and the particular setting. So time, place and person must all be present in order for the movement of time to occur.  Without one of these, time does not move and thus does not exist. So if one says all matter is created simultaneously or if one says that it is continually emerging, both statements depend on the existence of a Witnessing Entity. This Witnessing Entity cannot be separated out from the other two factors.

So if there is Witnessing Entity, that Entity may perceive the passage of time and thus alteration in the manifest Universe, but in actuality has any change occurred?  One substance may appear to change into another due to the degree of influence upon Cosmic Mind of the three gunas. So one form fades and another arises, but has the quantity or amount of expressed substance changed?  Nothing has changed.  It is the same. Only due to the cosmological factor of time there appears to be differences. Alterations in the gunas occur, but the Cosmic Citta remains in fact as it was. There is only the appearances of change.

Matter is ever emerging, yet it is changeless.  Forms rise and fall in the ocean, but the ocean remains unchanged. So there is no contradiction between these two theories. When the manifested Universe arises, all that will come with the passage of time already exists, but with the addition of a Witnessing Entity and the passage of time what exists appears to change. Yet it is one substance.  It is through sadhana that the truth of this can be witnessed.  In science an attempt is made to explain this through this theory of creation. It is in fact accurate. So do not make differences where they do not exist. Theories are not exclusive, only expressed in different terminology as the scientific community does not comprehend the nature of Cosmic Mind. I think it is sufficient.
