I will speak tonight about the relationship between sadhana and devotion. You know, there are those who perform sadhana in a regular way, but they have no devotion to God. Though they are performing sadhana each and every day, still they have not discovered the love within them for their Supreme Progenitor. I say there is a reason for this, their sadhana has been intellectual, academic, has not touched the heart, the core of their existence. For when this happens the sadhaka will get the experience of the Supreme Entity and seeing that one, He cannot help but feel love for the Supreme. Thus when sadhana brings one in close proximity to the divine entity, the sparks of devotional sentiment are sure to be ignited and if the mind is properly prepared, the sentiment of devotion will arise in a human being.
So you see devotion comes in a life of a sadhaka when that sadhaka comes in contact with the Supreme being. For it is only by direct experience of that entity that these sentiments are awaken in the heart. For that entity is more beautiful than the most exquisite art, more grand than the greatest ocean, more vast than the infinite sea. That being is more tender than the love of a mother for her child, more sweet than any other experience. So you see, when the sadhaka comes in a sphere of this divine entity and directly experiences His love, His sweetness, His all attracting existence, then that sadhaka will begin to feel the love of his heart, of her heart awakening and they will begin to feel that the Lord is so beautiful, so attractive, they want to be able to be near Him at all times. And with this sentiment comes the experience of devotion.
So devotion comes in sadhana when the direct experience is
there of the Supreme. From that experience, the sentiment of love
for the Great may arise and be cultivated. So a sadhaka should
never think, their sadhana is dry and incomplete, but they must
do what they can to bring the vision of the Supreme Brahma into
their minds. This may be done through kiirtan, through the reading
of spiritual books and through remembrance of Him. So even though
a human being may do sadhana, they do not necessarily cultivate
devotion. To know the Lord within your heart, you must make a
special effort.
