Guru and Disciple

February 9, 1996

I wish to speak about the relationship between Guru and disciple. You know this is the most precious relationship. It is more precious than any other, for in this relationship there is the contact between the Great and the small. For in the relationship of Guru and disciple there comes the experience of the divine presence. Guru manifests for His disciples the divine awareness, that is His duty. So one there is relation between Guru and disciple, it is one of the unit entity to the Supreme. It is not like any other relation, because there is no duality. That is not a interpersonal relationship, it is an intra-psychic relationship. This is because Guru is not an external entity, Guru is within you, Guru is all around, there is no place that that divine entity does not exist. So the relationship between Guru and disciple is an intra-psychic relationship, not an inter-personal relationship. So this is a fundemental difference between this relationship and any other relationship, that is why it is such (54) and important relationship. If the Guru is in physical form, if the Guru is manifesting in a physical form, that form is only to remind the disciple on that fundemental relationship which exists between him and the Supreme entity. And that relationship is not external, it is internal. So if one has a personal relationship to Guru, it is not an external relationship as one would have to one's friends and the societes. It is an internal relationship, one that is from the heart of the devotee to the Supreme. So this relationship is not a limited experience. It has unlimited potentiality. That is the other significant factor of this relationship, there is unlimited potentiality for internal contact.

You see, in all other relationships, you may be very close to someone, you may even be married to them, but in those relationships there is always duality, there are two, two expressions of consciousness, one and one. They may come very close to each other, they may be in harmony with each other, but then again they are two. But in the relationship to Guru, it is not the case. The potentiality lies in this relationship that two will become one. So it is a most unique relationship and the boundaries of individuality may be transcended in this relationship. The individuality may dissolve in the ocean of divine awareness. That is the great potential of this esoteric relationship. Now the relationship of Guru and disciple is sometimes misunderstood by people who have not experienced the depth of this endevour. They may think that there is a kind of....(121) and... upon the spiritual path... may find some magnetic personality, may be realized, may not be realized and attach themselves to that external individual and feel, I am having the relationship with Guru. It is a preliminary step to having an actual relationship to Guru. For that actual relationship will never be external, there may or may not be an external individuality who is expressing the love of Guru but the relationship that is there between that devote of Guru is internal.

So you see, that external personality is nothing but a shell to reflect to the disciples the essence of their own experience of the relationship to the divine. That relationship is held within the intra-psychic communication between the little and the Great. And it is the most precious relationship, so very precious. In that relation, the little and the Great dance their divine dance around each other as Radha and Krishna ever dancing, dancing in a dance of divine love. it is in this play, in this dance of love that the Supreme expresses His most sweet melody for the unit entity and in this play of love, the unit entities will be drawn to Him, drawn to Him. In this most intimate, intra-psychic relationship, they will come to know their divine father, their divine mother, they will come to know the Supreme within themselves and they will come to realize that what is within and what is without are the same. As they come in proximity to their beloved they will find that the qualitities and characteristics of that entity are coming on them.

They will find more and more that they are influenced by His thinking, that the approach of Guru, the mentatlity of Guru comes unto them and they find that there is a kind of blending between themselves and their Lord. And this blending happens in human history and it also may happen in the psycho-spiritual realm. And eventually with this blending, the mental sphere and the psycho-spiritual realm become very harmonized and the unit entity harmonized with Guru may blend himself, may blend herself into the true spiritual realm of Guru. And thus attain a direct experience of the cosnciousness of Guru, of the csonciousness of the Supreme entity. This happens through this intra-psychic relationship and does this continues all around over some time, may be short, may be somewhat long. Slowly, slowly in their internal dance of love that occurs, the two separate existences which seem so different, one the little person, the other the Great expense of universal consciousness they come together and become as one. This is the great blessing of Parama Purusha upon the living beings and so He appears as Guru so that this delightful relationship may come to exist and the little beings through this internal contact with the Supreme may come to find the path of Blessedness to their Supreme abode.
