Q: What is like to live as a devotee
at the time of Krishna?
In Vrindavan, Krishna was not a great political leader, he was just a boy growing of age. Yet those who were around Him came to know a certain sweetness, not only by day to day contact with Him, but through their own internal experience. For Krishna was not an ordinary boy. He would be with his play mates, he interacted with those around him in a very ordinary way, in a very casual way. They would laugh together, sing together, they would play together and imagine so many things. As he grew the boys and girls of his childhood grew with him and they knew him as their dear friend and playmate. You see, the relationship was very informal, very personal. So some saw him merely as a boy, others who had been touched by certain experiences saw him as more. For those, Krishna was not only the playmate of their childhood, but he was the Lord of their hearts. For in certain moments he would be with them, he would come to them and in the conversation, in the play, in the moments together, there would be times when, caught between one moment and the next in a beautiful flow of love, all would become united.
In the minds of these children there was blessedness and love. As they grew and became a little older, they came to know Lord Krishna not only as the fond friend of their childhood, but the very Lord of their hearts. For in each and every one of these children he instilled his own vibration, he instilled in them love unending. He showed them the capacity of the human heart. He gave to them his own love, his own devotion. Out of deepest love and affection for each and every one he revealed his true nature. So those children were caught in a dance of love with Lord Krishna.
You know they say that the flute of Lord Krishna was magical. That when he played his flute, all felt love that was infinite. They say that the people would be mesmerize and their minds would get lost; that they experienced a state of magnificent beauty so exquisite that when Krishna cease to play, their hearts were broken that He should not be playing his flute. They only wanted to stay forever in the state which they experienced when he played his flute. So they would say: "Krishna, Krishna, why have you stopped playing? We were enjoying so much. Please play your flute for us just a little longer." He could not resist them, so He would again play the flute and again the people would loose themselves. Unable to maintain their equilibrium their minds would be lost. Krishna would finally finish the flute playing. He would put the flute down and they would come to their senses and again they would say: "Oh Krishna why have you stopped playing, we were enjoying so much. Please play your flute a bit longer". And what could He do? And so He would play again for them. Like this Krishna enjoyed the companionship of those people in Vrindavan and they enjoyed their Krishna.
You know that was many years ago, but
what was in the hearts and minds of those people many years ago
may also be in the hearts and minds of people in this day. For
those feelings of love and blessedness, of intimate contact, they
are timeless. They are not limited to one culture or another culture,
they are not limited to certain types of exceptional people. But
for those feelings to express the opportunity must be there. And
how to establish the opportunity? It may be established by doing
Kiirtan, doing sadhana, singing to Lord, crying for Lord and allowing
yourself to feel, to experience the presence of Lord. So that
like those people long ago in Vrindavan who delighted in the presence
of Lord Krishna, you may also delight in the presence of the Divine
near to you. When you do Kiirtan, when you sing, when you offer
your heart with purity and love, you will come in contact with
your Lord. So be simple like those simple village folk whose hearts
were pure and open. Let yourself experience the love of Lord Krishna
and the charm of His flute in the Vrindavan of your heart.
