The Love of the Divine

January 20, 1995

Tonight's discourse will be on the relationship between divine love and human love. There are those who think that the Divine Being is a very impersonal entity who has no care for what happens to human beings. They think that in this world they are on their own, that no one cares if they should live or die, and that they must struggle to make a life for themselves. These people feel that there is nothing for them, no one for them, that only what they create will be there. They do not know that there is in fact a Divine Entity, a most precious being, at the very center of this cosmological flow. They do not know that this entire universe has sprung from the mental flow of that Divine Entity. From that Supreme Consciousness, quiescent at the very center of all existence, has sprung the manifest universe. It appeared like a lotus flower rising from the mind of that Supreme Entity, which we shall call "Parama Purus'a", that is, "Divine Consciousness" ("purus'a" means consciousness). That Divine Consciousness which lies quiescent at the very center of all existence is Parama Purus'a.

Now that consciousness is in every atom of this manifest universe. It is quiescent within every living being. There is no one, there is nothing which is outside of that Divine Entity. That Divine Consciousness is all-encompassing, all-pervading, all-knowing and omni-present. It is within each and every atom of this manifest universe and it is also in the quiescent essence, the unmanifest universe. So, it is not a fact that human beings are alone, for with them every moment of their existence is that Supreme Consciousness. Parama Purus'a is always with them, with each and every living being. It is not a fact that a person is alone. They are ever accompanied by Divine Consciousness, only they may not be aware of this Supreme Companion.

They may think they are alone, because they do not perceive what is with them. But should a human being change their outlook through intuitional practice, through contemplation and meditation, should they become more sensitive in their perception and focused in their ideation upon the Divine Entity, awareness of that Entity will dawn in their mind. Perception of the sweet and subtle qualities of that Infinite Being will come to them. It is a certainty. So you know, if you want to understand divine love, first of all, you must focus your concentration on the Supreme Being. You must bring your attention inward, into the very depths of your being, into the very essence of your "I" feeling. Then, in the very core of your own existence, you will find that Supreme Consciousness. Once you have found it, then you will see that there is something that you have inadvertently overlooked. What is that? What is overlooked? It is the Supreme Essence which lies within your being. That Divinity lies quiescent within each and everyone of you.

If you should focus your mind and perceive that Divinity within you, then you will come to realize that all along that Divine Being has been with you, has been guiding you, has been loving you, but you were ignoring Him. Nevertheless, when you look to Him, He does not mind that you have ignored Him. He will say to you, "Come, my son, come my daughter, come to me. Come to me, for I am ever for you, and you are most precious to me. You are my very child." You are the child of that Divine Entity, you are the child of that Infinite Being. So, that Entity will say, "Come my child, come to me. I care for you. I care for your needs, for your well-being and for your growth and development. So, I am calling to you, calling you to me, calling you to me." Thus Parama Purus'a will say to His child when the child focuses on Him, for He is a most loving Entity.

This entire universe is His creation. He is most in love with every living being of this manifest universe, for all are His children, all are His progeny. Loving all beings, He is calling to them, bringing them homeward, homeward unto Him. He is bringing them home. And what is it that He feels for the living beings? It is Infinite Love. For all are within Him, all are a part of His very being. His sentiment towards living beings is one of infinite love, and this boundless love, this unqualified love, we call Divine. He is always showering this flow of infinite love on living beings. He is ever giving His Divine love. It is there for the taking. It is there for all living beings, for all.

It is only the forgetting that makes one unable to perceive that love. If you have forgotten Him and do not notice that He is there with you, then it seems that that love does not exist. But in fact it exists, only you have faced the other direction, and you are not noticing the love that is given to you. So, if you would notice this love, you must first turn your attention inwards, towards the very essence of your own being. You must calm the mind and look deep inside of yourself to the very core of your being, and in that very core of yourself you find the opening where there is love that is unconditional.

You know, human love, the love between one person and another, is a reflection of this Divine love which is in the core of each and every being. Like the moon that is reflected in the waters of the pond, so the love of human beings reflects the love of the Divine. When the heart of a human being becomes attracted to the Supreme, the love in that human heart opens like an opening lotus. The person finds that there is love all around them, that the Divine Entity showers love upon them like soft, sweet rain. It is falling on them and through them, and they become absorbed in the flow, the sweet flow of Divine Consciousness, carried on the waves of Infinite Love. This experience is the grace of Parama Purus'a, the grace of God, and it is available for each and every human being to experience.

So if you want this Divine love, what must you do? You must give your mind to God and you must open you heart to the Infinite Being so that the qualities and characteristics of that most Beloved Entity come into your mind. Focus your attention on the sweet and subtle characteristics of Supreme Consciousness, on the sweet and tender love of that Infinite Being, and open your heart to that shower of love which is being given to you. Like a babe held in the arms of the mother, let yourself be held in that flow of Divine love. There you will find the sanctuary you have searched for all your life.

Are there questions tonight?

Q: Ba'ba', is it only by enlightenment that human being can become free of the past, and free of their psychological and emotional persuasions of the past?

This is a very good question. Some people think that to unravel the knots within the mind that have been created life upon life, and have come to focus the mental activity of an individual, it is necessary to go and unravel, untie each one, one by one. But you know, the minute that you look upon the cause of one and you resolve it, then you will find there is a cause for another, and again cause for another, and cause for another. Like this, it goes on and on. So the best psychology is instead to take the ideation of the Supreme. Rather than go through this mental process, it is more productive to ideate where you would like to go, to focus upon the qualities and characteristics of the Infinite and model yourself after that. Then slowly these samskaras, these patterns of the mind, will unravel. When they become more and more thin, the perception of reality becomes clearer and clearer until one day it is quite clear. For there are many illusions that the majority of people believe. They are the result of individual development. There is a feeling of "I" and "mine", that I am someone apart from you, that you are outside of me and I am separate from you. But the truth is somewhat different, should the capacity to perceive reality be developed.

Q: Ba'ba', where are you speaking to us from?

From the hiranamaya kos'a.

Q: Could you describe it?

Consciousness is multi-layered, multidimensional. There is the pure essence of Infinite Consciousness and when it finds expression in the Cosmic Mind then there is manifestation in the causal plane. That Consciousness finds some direction, then as it moves through the layers, through the planes, through the lokas and the kosas, it becomes more and more solidified. But what is solidified is the Divine Essence which is in every living being, the Consciousness which is quiescent at the very center of this manifest universe.

Q: Ba'ba' how to reply to a person who is attacking you in a negative way?

You give them love. You have compassion for the pain which has caused this reaction in their mind, but also you yourself are a spark of the Divine, are you not? So you must respect the sanctity of your own being as well.

Q: Ba'ba' how is that I can feel you so much more present now than when I go home, when I am alone? Are you radiating something special in this moment?

My child, I am always with you. There are times when the mind is led more easily to awareness of the Infinite. These times are to instill in you the experience of that Divinity within you, so that when you are alone that spark will grow and grow and become more and more accessible for you. Do you understand?

Yes, Ba'ba'.
