The Role of Parama Purus'a

July 6, 1996

Santa Cruz

I will speak tonight upon the role of Parama Purus'a, in the guidance of living beings, towards their spiritual desideratum. You know Parama Purus'a is the witnessing entity of this entire manifest universe. He is the witness of all existence. There is no one particle of this manifest universe which is not witnessed by Him. Without His witnesship it will cease to exist. For there can be nothing which is not of Him, for existence must be time, place and person. There must be a witnessing entity to all expression. Otherwise who would know that it exists? Mind can't exist without the witnesship of the Purus'a. But the Purus'a will vary in quality and characteristic and or in appearance of quality and characteristic when in association with different stage of manifestation. So that in the causal mind, the Purus'a will appear as Varat. It will be the causal witness, the causation of all expression. And when the Purus'a is imagining all of this universe, it is Hiranyagarbha, for this is the imaginative witness. He is qualified in the conditional expression of the imaginative universe. And when He manifests Himself in the physical universe, He is called Iishvara. He is bound in association with the manifest expression. This is Iishvara. He becomes bound or associated with His own creation.

And in the process of this association, the Purus'a becomes manifest in the reflected awareness of the created beings. In this capacity, Purus'a is known as Atman or the witnessing soul of the created beings. So the Atman appears to be somewhat constricted. It is the witness of that particular expression, that He is contained within the sense of individuality. So one may say that Atman is contained, but in fact this containment is an illusion, it is an illusionary containment . Atman appears to be contained while in association with a sense of individuated existence. But that which is contained within the sense of individuated existence is none other that the Supreme Purus'a who appears to be qualified by this association. But I have said all along that this witnessing entity, this witnessing cognition appears to modify. But in fact it is the very same substance in all of these expressions. It is the very same witness. Only there is the appearance of alteration if consciousness. And in this appearance the Purus'a appears to take different aspects. But this is merely appearance, for in each of His aspects He is ever the same, ever unchanged, residing ever in His own cognitive awareness.

Now when the Atman of a living being begins to awaken to self-awareness from the slumber of material association, the person will experience that they are self-aware. They will begin to think: "Who am I?" "What is the meaning of my existence?" "Why am I here?" These are the kind of self-reflective questions that will be asked as the Atman begins to awaken from the slumber of materialism. And this Atman will then grow and then grow in self-awareness through the process of Brahma sadhana. This self-awareness is enhanced. So if you want to enhance your self-awareness, if you wish to awaken Atman, you must do Brahma sadhana. You must do it each and every day, twice a day and maintain the ideation upon the Supreme.

Doing this you will find that slowly, slowly, He becomes more and more into your view . You will find that He is always with you, that wherever you are, whatever you are doing, you feel He is with You. And why do you feel? Because your atman has awakened and the atman within you is none other than the very Paramatman, the witness, the cognitive witness of all creation, reflected in the tiny scope in the sense of your individuality. And if you would freed the Atman you must dissolve this illusion of individuality, you must break it and become that which you really are. Break down the walls of self-deceit, break down the barriers of egotism, melt away the boundaries of your individuality and become associated consciously, cognitively with the Paramatman, with the Supreme cognitive awareness.

Do not let yourselves fall asleep. Awaken, arise from your slumber. Surrender all of your self-deceptions unto the feet of Supreme Brahma and become aware of your infinite origin. Let your small awareness get merged in that vast ocean of Supreme existence. You think because you inhabit a physical body that you are this body, you are this mind, you become associated with material existence. Do you thin: "I am a body, I have grown to such and such age and in the future I will pass from this world." But you are mistaken to think like this, because you are not a body, nor are you a mind, though you have one body and you have one mind for your expression, but you exist equally in every particle of this manifest universe, in the vast oceans, in the rocks and hilly places, in the valleys, in the towns, in the people, in the small creatures, in all of them you exist and you are witnessing your expression. So though you feel identified with one body and one mind and one "I" feeling, "I exist",

" I have a body", "I have a mind", "I own two automobiles". You have this feeling, these involvements, but in fact you are not this body, this mind or the owner of your automobiles anymore than you are the rock upon which you sit or the vast ocean before you. All of these things are a part of you of. You exist equally in all of them, for who are you ? You are the witnessing entity, the witnessing awareness of your own existence and all of existence. For this atman is the witnessing entity of your existence is composed of the same substance as the witnessing entity of all that exists. So it is none other than Paramatman.

Who has fallen asleep, become associated with "I feelings" and forgotten that He is in all creation and He is ever quiescent, unchanged, pure and immutable, that all of these transformations are only superficial appearances. So recognize your own nature and do not delude yourself, allow yourself to become one with the Supreme cognitive existence. For in fact you are already that unified awareness. There is nothing in this manifest or unmanifest universe which is outside of the Supreme cognitive expression. There is nowhere you can go, nothing you can do to be apart from Him, only you may close your eyes, close your ears and fall into slumber if you so like. But I would suggest that it is time for you to awaken from you slumber and remember your origins. So you, please, dedicate your lives to this awareness, keep it always in the front.
