Inner and outer changes

Retreat discourse

July 27, 1996

There will come a time when it is no longer possible to adhere to external conventions, when it is no longer possible to fulfill external obligations without internal expression. You see, a sadhaka, like a child will begin to learn slowly and as time goes one will advance in their knowledge, their understanding of themselves and the world around them. For the child, the child learns to see, he is not the center of the world, but other people exist around him. The child learns there are many different people in the world and that those people have feelings, thoughts, experiences of their own and that he is just a part of the world. But for the sadhakas as time progresses, there is a different knowledge that comes, it is knowledge if the Great. The infinite Purusha which pervades all existence, both internal and external , the infinite Purusha is not only within you but all around you. He cannot be ignored and sooner or later in the life of a sadhaka, a time comes when following external conventions, meeting up to external demands does not fulfill the sadhaka. They find that there is something deep within in them and which must find expression. And what is that which they are seeking to find deep within them and to express? It is none other than the Atman which is the small expression associated with your individual being of the supreme Purusha. So that Atman, that Supreme Purusha which lies associated with your "I" feeling, with your internal state of self-awareness, desires to come forward in your life, to be the corner stone of your existence, so that you may know the Infinite which lies within you.

There is an inherent yearning in human beings to know the Great. It lies, it is a fundamental propensity of a human being to long for the Great, to search for the Great and this longing underlies all human experience. But when the human being is not fully mature, they will search in the wrong places, they will search in the multifarious colors and forms of this manifest existence and they will find that their search is empty. For that divinity to which they are innately drawn, for which they are longing deep within them, cannot be found in the external forms and colors of this world and unless it is first found within the core of your own being. From that core, it will expand, grow in your awareness and having grown in awareness, it will push forward, demanding your attention. For there is an innate attraction between the little and the Great. They are innately drawn together and you are innately drawn to that supreme Purusha, you are innately attracted, longing for Him, to be near Him, to be with Him, to feel Him in every moment, to feel Him in the core of your existence. And He likewise is longing to engulf you in His divine love, to melt you into the ocean of supreme blessedness. This mutual longing brings about a change in self-awareness and that change necessitates a change in the life of a sadhaka. For once this awareness begins to awaken within the sadhaka, it will make its own requirement of that boy or that girl. It will make its own requirement, for it is the corner stone, the essence of your existence that infinite ocean of blessedness lies in the very heart of your being. As you come to know it, it will come forward, come near to you, for there is a mutual attraction and as this occurs you will find that that supreme beatitude is becoming more and more manifest in your day to day life and soon you are seeing Him all around you and you become aware that all along He was with you in all the forms and colors of this manifest universe as well as in the pure ocean of infinite blessedness.

So the sadhaka who has understood this will come to recognize that their life is no longer as it was. They will come to recognize that they must follow Him from within, they must find Him in the core of their beings, in what they are doing, know Him, let His wave of infinite blessedness wash over them and move with Him in all that they do. This realization will come in the life of a sadhaka should they continue their spiritual practice. And when it does, it is a very good sign. Though it may cause certain external changes to occur. So a sadhaka who finds that this is happening in their life, should be very happy and should know that the supreme Lord is very close to them and surely He will care for them and remain ever their closest companion.
