The Waves of Infinity

10/8/94

Pescadero Beach

In this world of transitory existence, in this temporal world, a human being is born, will live their life and fade from this very world into oblivion. In this world a human being will come with nothing and, when they depart they will also bring nothing with them. What is acquired during the life of a person cannot be brought with them once the life is over. The fine credentials, the wealth and power of this life will fade away like dust with the passage of time. Nothing is permanent in this world. All that you possess you will lose. All that you love will be torn from you. Nothing is permanent in this transitory existence.

The ages pass and worlds are born. Eons go by and worlds die and again worlds are born and again they die. Stars are formed and then they pass from existence. Galaxies come into manifestation, universes explode into existence, and they pass away in the same fashion in which they came. So, this universe is a transitory phenomenon. Stars are born and shine. In their brightness life comes and evolves and so many creatures are born and live and fade from existence. And still it goes on. Endlessly the life is created and ever passing from existence. Like the waves in the ocean which rise, crash against the beach and fall again, so this manifest expression, this manifest universe rises, expresses and fades from existence, back into the ocean of Infinite Consciousness, back into the endless sea from which all life rises and into which it again fades.

So this is the nature of all creation. This is the very fundamental process of expansion, manifestation and dissolution. It is an endless tide. It has no beginning and no end though universes may rise, galaxies may be formed and multiple beings, millions upon millions may rise into existence and fade away. Whole species may rise and fall again into oblivion, and rise again through evolution to more and more subtle forms. Yet despite all of these changes, the time will come when all of the galaxies will be dissolved and the universes will fade into oblivion.

So, this is the rhythm of creation. The drum is ever beating out the rhythm of creation and with every beat, universes rise and with every beat universes fall. Such is the rhythm, the endless rhythm of the dance of Lord Shiva. There is nothing in this created world which will not turn to dust, which will not fade away with the sands of time and with the beating of the drum of creation. The rhythm is ever moving, ever pounding softly through all existence, it cannot be stopped. The rhythm of life goes on and on, on and on, for all eternity. The drum is beating, playing out the rhythm of birth, life and dissolution. Again and again, infinite beings come into existence and again and again they fade away.

So the endless dance goes on being danced throughout the ages, throughout the eons for ever and ever. It is the endless dance of creation and dissolution. So, if you would understand this great dance, if you would grasp the rhythm of the universe, you must dance in the rhythm that is being played. You must dance forever to this rhythm and, dancing in harmony with this rhythm, you may glimpse the one who is dancing, whose feet have marked the rhythm, who has played the drum, the final beat for all creation. You may grasp this One. You may glance a quick glimpse as He dances, as She dances eternally, beating out the rhythm of creation, preservation and dissolution. If you can grasp the dancer behind the dance, you see the One who pounds the drum. You experience the One who sets the rhythm and you take your shelter in that Entity. You take your shelter in the one who is playing the rhythm, who is dancing the infinite dance of creation. You do not simply move in the tide of this dance, but you grasp at the One who is dancing and you hold with all your strength to that One. That One who is pure, eternal, who, though He dances a great dance, never moves at all, that one who has no boundary, who has no end which can be found though you travel the length and breadth of all creation.

You cannot find where He has begun or where He ends. Though you go infinite distances you will not find the end of that One, you cannot travel far enough to find where that One ends. So you search for the One who is endless, who is Infinite. You look to the dancer and not to the dance and find your shelter, your safety, your well being in the Infinite Lord of all creation. Then though the waves are falling and rising, though you may ride the crest and sink to the depths, still you will be without any movement for you will be immersed in the sea from which the waves have risen and you will know what is the dream and what is not.

Find your home of homes. Go to that abode, high in the mountains, high in the Himalayas, high in the tallest mountains above all distractions. Go to the depths of the sea, deep in the deepest cavern of your heart, beyond all noise, beyond all risings and fallings. There you find, in the silence of love, the home of homes, the place where you belong and where you shall be ever sheltered from the storm of life. There you find the Infinite Being held within you, witness to all creation, witness to the endless dance of creation, dissolution and destruction. There you find that One who will be your shelter for all time, so that never again must you suffer the ups and downs of this created universe. So that you may take eternal shelter in the Infinite beyond the scope of mind, beyond the fetters of this world.

Take shelter in the Infinite Being and in no lesser object, in no lesser form. For every other form will only lead to suffering. If you should seek your shelter in another, then you will find that it is only a further cause for suffering. That One, within the heart, will not bring you suffering, but will bring you infinite joy, infinite love, and infinite happiness.

Though you may search the world over, you will not find what you search for around you. If you would find happiness that will be lasting, I suggest that you look within your heart, that you build love within your heart and that you take your shelter in this love, spread it to all beings, spread it to yourself and most importantly, you see that love in the Infinite. For there is no difference between the Infinite Consciousness and the pure essential essence of love. They are one and the same experience. You know, there are so many things that are spoken of as love but they are not. "I love that one so much" but what am I saying? I am perhaps saying "I am wanting something". "I love this sofa". What are you saying? You love your own comfort. It means you desire, it does not mean you love. So, it is a word that is somewhat misused from time to time.

Love is unconditional. It is a feeling of the heart and of the mind. True love is not so easily acquired. To grasp the essence of love, one must make the mind subtle and soft. One must make the ears able to hear the inner sound. One must make the eyes able to see the brightness within. One must make the heart full and open. Love is not a grasping. It is a knowing. Love is not conditional, it is a condition of spirit. Know that One who is Infinite, know that love in every molecule of existence. Sharpen your capacity to perceive, and you will see that love is all around you and within you. You are not inferior, you are not less than anyone, you are the very essential consciousness, the omnipresent consciousness which is manifest in all creation, which rides the wave of creation and dissolves again into the sea of infinitude. That is your nature. So you should not think you are inferior to anyone. It is your essential nature to love because it is the very condition of your soul. You are not a loving person, you are love itself. Pure, pristine, without any qualification, without any condition. It is unconditional, you are unconditional.

You are, if you would look very deeply with very refined perception, the Infinite Purus'a, dancing the dance of creation. When you look for your Lord, when you attempt to perceive the dancer behind the dance, who is it you will find there? Who is it you will find? It is your own Self you will find. Not the self you have thought, not so and so who lives at such and such place, not this, no, no, no, this is not who you are. You have been dreaming a dream, it is time to awake and become your essential nature, the dreamer behind the dream, the dancer who plays the rhythm of all creation, the One who will dance the dance of infinite forms throughout the galaxies and universes, throughout all time and all space. The One who beats the rhythm, it is you and no other.
